Mitch's Story

Ex-AFL star, Mosh customer of 2 years, Mitch Brown.

“My hair is important to me... As a guy, I feel like I've never been able to say that before.”

“My hair is important to me... As a guy, I feel like I've never been able to say that before.”

Mosh: Tell us about the first time you really noticed your hair was changing?

Mitch: The first time I actually noticed that maybe this was my fate of baldness, we were sitting there on a Monday in our lecture theatre reviewing the game on Saturday.

It was like our first rainy game in years. I played in Western Australia, so it was quite sunny for most of our games and it just bucketed down and we're all wet and it really does expose you if you have thinning hair. And the thing about reviewing an AFL game or most sports is they have the behind the goals or the camera from above and it looks down on you.

And funny enough, I actually played a really good game, so I had a lot of touches, which means a lot of time on the camera. And every time I popped up in the review, I could see that spot at the top of my head. It was clear, bright as day, and my skin was shining through.

I had completely missed that spot because I'm a tall guy, and no one else really points it out for you. My partner didn't point it out because they couldn’t see it. So when I saw it and realised for the first time I remember feeling like this anxiousness about me. I was like, oh, maybe I thought I was going to get away with it and not lose my hair at an early age like my brother, dad and uncles. I did think that genetically I would have to go down that path as well, but that doesn’t have to be true.

Mosh: What does your hair mean to you?

Mitch: I’m the closest I’ve felt to my identity, and really happy and really proud. My hair symbolises so much.

“You know, I used to be the hat guy... And then suddenly you take that hat off.”

Mosh: Tell me more about your mullet. The Mitch Brown Mullet. Why is it so important for you at this time in your life?

Mitch: I came out publicly as the first bisexual player in the men's competition in the AFL over a year ago. Before that, it took me about two years to really peel back these final layers of connecting and understanding who I really am. That person who I am is the Mitch that I always knew was inside, and was always embarrassed and shameful of who I am. And I always tried to hide. And even that goes into the haircuts that I used to get - the short back and sides every time.

And all I wanted to have was, you know, peroxide or like spiky hair. I used to go and steal the gel from my older brother and then just spike up my hair into a mohawk. And it was like this big thing for me to say ‘this is actually me’. Like a bit of, you know, wildness. But I felt like out in the real world, I couldn't show that. So, when I started to really connect to my identity, including my sexuality a couple of years ago, that included reclaiming my style in my hair.

I had just joined Mosh, and I went to the barber and asked him to cut me a mullet - at the time I had a buzz cut and he told me he couldn’t really do it. I just told him I really wanted to do something different that represents that rebellion in me to really connect me to who I really am. So he cut it and I religiously went back to him every week.

So the mullet is so much more than how it looks. It's really symbolic for me recapturing my identity, and I wouldn't be able to grow this mullet if I didn't have that moment reclaiming who I really am.

Mosh: Why are these conversations important for you?

Mitch: I'm really big on breaking down rigid stereotypes.

You don't just have to concede. I think having open and honest conversations, especially for my two boys, they're so young and I know as they grow up, forming an environment and the foundations to be able to have honest conversation about everything in life, including the way they look. That includes hair loss.

You can care about your hair. And that's really important to me, because there were so many times when I was growing up as a teenage boy when I felt as If “I'm not meant to care, so I won't. If I actually look like I care, I'm going to get bullied.”

The world's changing, I think more men, more boys, more than ever are caring about their hair and the way they look. And that is such a healthy and positive message, you know? And whether you do or not, it really doesn't matter. But the fact that you can get support and help for things like hair loss and not feel ashamed of that, I think that's the most important message.
