What does stress do to my hair?
The simple answer is, probably not a whole lot!
You might at times feel like tearing your hair out, but stress is not normally the cause of baldness or a receding hairline. There is no evidence that stress causes a garden variety of male or female pattern baldness.
Interestingly, despite the number of football managers who seem to go grey during their tenure, there is no evidence that stress causes grey hair either. Hair goes grey because of genetic factors resulting in defective melanin production in hair follicles.
If you have grey hair and are balding, your hair regrowth after using a hair loss treatment will still obviously be grey.
As touched on previously, stress can precipitate some rarer conditions that lead to hair loss. Telogen Effluvium usually results in pretty rapid, but reversible hair shedding. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition causing patchy hair loss that can be precipitated by stress. Finally, trichotillomania is a disorder in which people feel compelled to pull out their own hair. These conditions are all much rarer than androgenic alopecia.
Regardless of the effect on your hair, too much stress is not a good thing. It’s important to look after your mental health by eating healthily, exercising, and getting enough sleep. If you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed, there’s no shame in asking for help from your general practitioner.
